Police in Prince George are making it even more difficult to get away with stealing packages. 

According to Cpl. Craig Douglass, Prince George RCMP has launched Canada's first-ever first Amazon package bait program. The program comes after Cst. Brent Benbow contacted the online retailer to discuss the theft of their packages from doorsteps and mailboxes in the community. 

As a result of that correspondence, Amazon provided packaging, real products and surveillance technology to assist officers in identifying and arresting those responsible for these types of thefts. With help from a select group of residents in the city, the program was launched.

"Just like us, Amazon recognizes that package theft is an issue," said Cst. Benbow. "They were very thankful we are addressing it and were excited to support us in our efforts.  It's always helpful to have partners in the community who support our efforts to stop property crime."

To date, bait packages have been deployed over 50 times at various locations in the city. A total of three have been activated already. 

One of these investigations led to the arrest of a 37-year-old man. That investigation was forwarded to the BC Prosecution Service for consideration of charges.
