  • VIDEO: With homeless people protesting, city poised to announce more help

The City of Kelowna has an announcement to make tomorrow regarding some indoor emergency shelter for the homeless.

It's timely, not just because winter weather has set-in, but because homeless people were literally protesting outside at the time.

A small demonstration outside Kelowna City Hall included several homeless people.

The consensus is that forcing them to strike down their tents between 9 am and 7 pm is inhumane.

"It's terrible. It's like they're herding sheep and treating people like animals," said Dan Palmer who is currently spending his nights in an abandoned building."I think it's awful."

"Isn't that a little pathetic?" asks Dale Brewer, who used to be homeless. "I would like to have our tents be able to stay set up during the day," said Steven Simpson who has been staying at the site offered-up by the city. "So we can have some kind of community set-up and start trusting our neighbours."

Ed Cull was on hand in support of the protest. "What a way to live," he said. "Talk about homeless. Kelowna is making it worse."

Even as those words were being spoken outside, the issue was being raised inside council chambers. Mayor Colin Basran made it known that there will be an announcement tomorrow with regard to some indoor shelter for the homeless. No details were provided.
