A South Okanagan bridge has won recognition from Canada Post.

The Ashnola No. 1 railroad bridge – also known as the Red Bridge – in Keremeos has been chosen as one of five surviving covered Canadian bridges to be highlighted in a stamp series.

The stamps will be issued next week.

Built in 1907 and rebuilt in 1926, the Red Bridge – which stretches 135 metres across the Similkameen River – was converted to automobile use in 1961.

In 2005, the Red Bridge Committee was created to save the structure from being destroyed after years of vandalism and ice jams.

It is one of only 140 covered bridges remaining in rural communities across Canada.

At the end of the 19th century, there were over 1,400 of them in the country.

The other bridges to feature on the stamps are:

• New Brunswick’s Hartland Bridge

• Quebec’s Powerscourt Bridge

• Quebec’s Félix-Gabriel-Marchand Bridge

• Ontario’s West Montrose Bridge

The stamps will be issued on Monday, June 17.
