  • Hwy 97 has finally reopened following a month long closure

The saga that has become the Highway 97 road closure has finally concluded.

On Tuesday morning, crews officially permitted traffic to travel along the stretch of highway between Summerland and Penticton.

A major rockslide forced the highway's closure between Callan Road and N Beach Road for 1.6 kilometres at the beginning of February.

According to Ministry of Transportation, "20,000 cubic metres of material has been removed since the slide occurred, which is three times more than originally estimated, as the back slope of the slide was much deeper than expected.”

The Ministry of Transportation has also reported that highway repairs could cost up to $1-million.
