Canadians will be legally allowed to purchase and consume recreational cannabis by this time next week.

However, that doesn’t mean lighting up in public will be legal everywhere, as each municipality across the country has adopted their own regulations.

For Okanagan residents, that means cannabis laws will differ on either side of the William R. Bennett Bridge.

On Wednesday, West Kelowna announced bylaw amendments that restrict cannabis consumption to private property, with a $500 fine established for smoking or vaping anywhere except private property.

Across the bridge in Kelowna, cannabis consumption will follow city bylaws that allow smoking or vaping on private properties that permit smoking, city sidewalks and roads.

However, Kelowna does not permit smoking or vaping in parks public spaces and within six metres of doorways, including sidewalk patios and bus shelters.

Recreational cannabis is scheduled to become legal on Wednesday, Oct. 17.
