(UPDATE: August 2 @ 8:45 p.m.) – Highway 8 is now open to single lane alternating traffic after a wildfire started west of Merritt this evening.
(UPDATE: August 2 @ 6:20 p.m.) – The BC Wildfire Service is responding to a new wildfire that started earlier this evening near Merritt.
The fire is estimated at three hectares in size. There are helicopter and airtankers assisting. The fire is within the City's jurisdiction, so local crews are also at the scene.

The BC Wildfire Service says they are responding to reports of a new wildfire near Merritt this evening.
Highway Maintenance has confirmed that the highway between Merritt and Lower Nicola has been closed due to the wildfire.
