Levi Price is a portrait and wedding photographer based out of Kelowna, BC. In the summer of 2013, after suffering a knee injury and being unable to work or do much of anything else for 8 weeks, he decided he needed a new hobby and picked up the camera. He began coaxing his partner and friends into letting him take their photograph, and it wasn't until a couple of years later that he was able to start photographing strangers, and eventually develop a style of portraiture that would provide him an outlet for artistic expression.
Why do you use Instagram?
I use Instagram not only as a platform to showcase my work, but also as a way to network and connect with other artists. It's proven to be an unparalleled avenue for finding models, hair & makeup artists, and even other photographers to collaborate with.
What will people see on your feed?
While I shoot many different things, my absolute favourite is portraiture and that's what I post on my feed.
Does your page have a specific style?
My portraits tend to be on the darker side, and I strive to capture or express emotion in all of my images. To me, photography is an expression of how I see things, which is partly why most of my photos take on a somewhat somber atmosphere. When I first started shooting I would just take pictures of faces; really tight shots from the collarbone up, focusing entirely on the emotion in the eyes and facial expression. I think that this has helped shape my style as it is now, as I like to shoot up close and personal with the subject opposed to using a longer focal length and keeping my distance. In doing so I feel that I can accentuate the emotion in the eyes, and make the subject feel "closer".
Favourite Instagram accounts to follow?
@harisnukem is without a doubt my favourite photographer. Every photograph he releases is a bloody work of art, and I find him to be massively inspirational in his work ethic and ability to always be moving forward in his work. Some other favourites are @sorelleamore and @christopher.james, not only is their work amazing but their stories are often educational or just plain fun to watch, @bob_sala, @nashrzl, @rjmckinnon, and @djuansala.
Why do you follow KelownaNow?
I think it's important to keep up to date with what's going on in your community, and doing so online is the best way to do that for someone who is kind of asocial such as myself.
How do you decide on your location for shoots?
Essentially I never stop looking for locations. When I'm driving somewhere, out and about with a friend, or working, my eyes are always peeled for what might make a nice backdrop, or what may look nice when the light hits it just right.
Biggest Instagram moment?
I'm not sure what constitutes a big Instagram moment, but I think the first time I booked a paid shoot through Instagram DM was a pretty good feeling. Either that or being featured on a page with a large following. Both give the feeling that I'm on the right track, and I should keep doing what I'm doing.
