Those eager to sign up to drive for Uber in Kelowna can have their chance to hear what it’s all about.

On Monday night, the ride sharing company is holding a driver-partner info session at the Royal Anne Hotel from 6-9 p.m.

Uber.

“We hold these info sessions in communities across Canada so people can learn about the benefits of the Uber platform and so we may assess local driver interest,” said Uber spokesperson Susie Heath, who was clear that they do not have plans to launch Uber in Kelowna right now.

Tom Wilson, communications coordinator with the City of Kelowna, said the city is waiting to see how the province responds to Uber.

“Because the taxi industry is regulated by the province, all cities in B.C. need to wait and see what the province puts in place, and then we'd see what our authorities might be for granting chauffeur's permits and business licenses for the company,” he explained.

In B.C., the province has authorities over certain bylaws surrounding taxis. Because of this, Kelowna as a city doesn’t have the authority over Uber other cities, like Edmonton, which legalized Uber in January.

Uber's Kelowna meeting will provide more information about the Uber platform. Interested potential drivers can come to one of their sessions, ask questions and start the driver signup process.

The sessions will be made up of three components, including a 15-minute presentation, a question and answer period, and uploading required documents.

People who want to attend one of the two information sessions, at 6 p.m. and 7:30, are asked to RSVP.

You are also asked to bring your registration documents if you want to sign up, including a valid Canadian driver’s license, B.C. vehicle registration and insurance and proof that you can work in the country.

Your vehicle must be a 2006 model or newer with four doors and Uber asks that you create an account on their website before attending.
