  • Temperature records fall across the province

Environment Canada says temperature records were broken across the province on Wednesday, including one that dated back to 1912.

A total of 26 records fell with some just inching past the old record and others smashing them by more than 10 degrees. In Port Alberni the old record of 22.8 degrees, which was set in 1912 was broken as a new high of 23.2 degrees was reached.

An old record in Lillooet of 23.9 degrees, which was set in 1923, also fell with a new record temperature of 25 degrees reached. The hot spot in the province was Bella Bella as temperatures there reached a staggering 25.6 degrees. That smashed the old record of 16.2 degrees which was set in 1995.

According to Environment Canada, a strong ridge of high pressure combined with sunshine resulted in the broken temperature records. More records may be broken on Thursday as in Kelowna the temperature is expected to reach in the 20s; Kamloops will be even warmer with a predicted forecast of 24 degrees, and 22 degrees in Merritt.
