  • B.C. Government Warns of Backcountry Danger

Following dangerous avalanches over the weekend, the provincial government is warning backcountry-goers to take caution.

A fatal avalanche near Golden on Sunday claimed the life of a Calgary man.

A second avalanche, in the Chatter Creek area—northwest of golden, sent seven people to hospital.

</who> Chatter Creek."This weekend has brought more tragedy to our mountains because of avalanches. Our hearts break for the families of those who have lost loved ones to B.C.'s backcountry this season,” said Naomi Yamamoto, Minister of State for Emergency Preparedness, in a statement.

"I love the outdoors. It's what makes B.C. so remarkable. But it can be dangerous, even when you equip yourself with the proper training and tools for survival. The risk is real.”

A special public avalanche warning is still currently in place for B.C. central and southern interior ranges.

The warning, issued by Avalanche Canada, was put in place Friday and will last until at least Monday night and applies to the North Columbia, South Columbia, the Purcells, Glacier National Park, and the Kootenay Boundary.

"We are urging British Columbians and visitors to our beautiful province to take great caution when exploring outdoors,” continued Yamamoto. “Be aware of the snow conditions in the area before heading out take an avalanche skills training course, and take the proper gear.

“This won’t eliminate the risk, but it will increase the chances for returning home safely."

Yamamoto suggests everyone carry a transceiver, probe, and shovel, when heading to the backcountry, and check the avalanche forecast prior to their trip.
