Breaking News:

This is some breaking news!

  • Netflix is carrying more than $20 billion USD of debt

Despite the undeniable breakaway success of so much of the company's original programming, from Stranger Things to Narcos, it has now emerged that Netflix is fairly deep in the financial hole with debts to the tune of $20 billion USD according to the L.A. Times

It turns out that the streaming platform’s commitment to building its programming arsenal is actually the cause of its woes. According to the LA Times, Netflix is “pouring money into expensive prestige projects and expects to spend at least $6 billion in content this year.”

However, for the time being, Netflix continues to crank out a whole host of new shows and fresh seasons on the immediate horizon likely due to the fact that we’re all still watching.

The company is expected to spend $6 billion on original content this year, with an undetermined budget spent on licensing fees for programs from TV studios. Its net cash outflow will increase this year to $2.5 billion, up from $1.7 billion, and the company expects “to be free-cash-flow negative for many years."

Maybe it's time to stop sharing those Netflix passwords with all your roommates.
