If all goes to plan, Danté Grootjes will spend his Grade 12 year training at one of the most prestigious ballet companies in North America.

The Kelowna teenager was recently accepted into the Professional Division’s Ballet Academic program at the Royal Winnipeg Ballet School.

“I have been passionately pursuing ballet for only two years, yet my dedication and natural talent have earned me a place in one of Canada’s most esteemed ballet programs,” Grootjes said. “This opportunity is a significant step towards my dream of becoming a professional dancer.”

Unfortunately, attending such an esteemed institution away from home comes with its fair share of costs, which is a significant hurdle for Grootjes.

He needs to raise $28,000 to cover the cost of both ballet and school tuition, as well as room and board in Winnipeg for several months.

Grootjes can’t get a scholarship, which are only offered to first-year students, and he is ineligible for most bursaries and loans since he has not graduated from high school yet.

“I have been raised by a single mom, who has always been my biggest supporter,” he explained. “She has made countless sacrifices to nurture my passion for dance while also providing for my brother and sister. Despite her unwavering support, the financial burden of this opportunity is overwhelming.”

The young dancer says he doesn’t want financial constraints to be the reason his dream is halted and said any type of monetary support would be “immensely appreciated.”

“Your contribution will not only help me to attend the Royal Winnipeg Ballet School but also inspire me to continue striving for excellence in my dance career,” he noted. “My vision is to inspire other young boys and men to pursue their passions no matter what obstacles they may have to overcome.”
