According to the BC Highway Patrol (BCHP), police received reports of a vehicle driving the wrong way in the northbound lanes of Hwy 5 just before 9 pm last night.

“Minutes later, and before police could intercept the wrong-way driver, a grey Dodge Ram pickup and a white Hyundai Kona hatchback collided head-on,” wrote the BCHP.

The collision killed two people and seriously wounded three others.

“Police are investigating the possibility that criminal behaviour caused this tragic collision,” said Cpl. Michael McLaughlin.

“We need every available witness who can tell us what the drivers were doing in the minutes and hours leading up to this collision.”

Anyone who witnessed the events leading up to the collision or has dash camera footage is asked to contact the BCHP at 250-828-3111 and quote file (2100) 2025-3075.

When asked which vehicle was allegedly driving the wrong way, the BCHP stated that no more details of the collision would be released “because we do not want to taint the memory of witnesses when they tell us what they saw.”
