    Why are clothes still gender-specific?

While society has made leaps and bounds in viewing sexual preference, gender identity and other concepts as non-binary, why is the same not true for our clothes?

Some people have made the argument that men and women are shaped differently, but regardless of your gender, I'm sure you can think of numerous times you've tried on an article of clothing and been met with disappointment.

    Shape-specific instead of gender-specific

Many of us have experienced the feeling that certain articles of clothing aren’t made with our body type in mind — and we’re not wrong.

For centuries, clothes have been tailored to the average shape and size of a man or woman.

But what do you do if you aren’t the “average shape”, and who decides what the average shape is anyways?

Some of the more high-end and expensive corners of the fashion world have begun producing gender neutral and shape inclusive clothing. But, affordable clothes that look and feel good can still be hard to find for many.

It feels inherently wrong that owning comfortable and well-fitting clothes could be a luxury for some people.

What if instead of indirectly shaming those who fall outside of the projected norm, companies made clothes that are more inclusive?

While we can’t expect affordable clothing to be tailored to our exact shape, brands could start by producing and merchandising based on body shape rather than gender.

    What do you think?

Do you think clothes should be shape-specific instead of gender-specific? Will the fashion industry ever abandon gender-specific clothing?
