A West Kelowna water supply update is showing good news for the city, but they are still erring on the side of caution.

Council was provided a water supply update on Wednesday because of the drought they faced last year.

City of West Kelowna staff have been measuring snowpack levels at lslaht (Horseshoe) Lake, which is in the upper portion of the Powers Creek watershed, since 1982.

The data measured matches up well with the Province of BC’s River Forecast Centre, which shows that the snowpack is 128 per cent of normal and the snow water equivalent was 109 per cent of normal.

Although the snowpack levels are a positive sign for the water storage levels, the city says it will continue to monitor the situation closely.

Warmer than normal temperatures are expected to continue into the summer months which will likely have an impact on spring freshet and stream flow levels.

Water conservation will once again be of high importance in 2016, according to city staff.

They are currently working with Urban Systems on a water rate study so they can conserve water over and above what was done in 2015.

The study will come back to Council for more input later this spring.

Right now, West Kelowna is under Stage 1 water restrictions, but staff will make the decision in April whether higher restrictions will be needed to start the irrigation season.

Stage 1 restrictions require that watering is permitted for even numbered addresses on even numbered calendar days and odd numbered addresses on odd numbered calendar days.

At this time, West Kelowna staff have also begun work on a Drought Management Plan.
