A West Kelowna Warriors forward has won some BCHL hardware.

Mike Hardman was awarded the Bob Fenton Trophy on Tuesday, given annually to the player who exhibits the fundamental aspects of sportsmanship while excelling at the game.

It’s determined by a vote of the league’s coaches.

The Massachusetts native scored 39 goals and added 33 assists in 58 games this season, registering just 16 penalty minutes along the way.

"Biggest thing is that I try to play the right way but at the same time I play physical and create scoring chances," said Hardman. "Thank you to my coaches and my teammates for pushing me to be best I can be."

It’s the first time a Warriors player has taken home the Bob Fenton Trophy, which has been awarded to BCHL players on and off since 1967.

“Mike plays the game the right way,” said head coach Brandon West. “He’s very competitive and plays within the rules.”

Also on Tuesday, Victoria Grizzlies forward Alex Newhook, who’s expected to be a first-round pick in the 2019 NHL entry draft, won Most Valuable Player.

James Miller of the Penticton Vees was named the league’s best defenceman, while Joe Martin of the Merritt Centennial took home Coach of the Year honours.

Hardman was the rest of the Warriors are off to Wenatchee to begin their first-round playoff series against the Wild this weekend.

Game one gets going on Saturday at 7:05 p.m. and Sunday’s game two is a 6:05 p.m. start time.
