The West Kelowna Warriors are coming out of the holiday break with a new head coach.

President Chris Laurie announced on Friday night that the team had relieved Brandon West of his duties as coach and general manager.

His replacement will be Simon Ferguson, a former Kelowna Rocket who has been at the helm of the Okanagan Rockets Major Midget team for the last two years.

“We are charting a new course and building a new culture,” said a statement from team owners, John Murphy and Rod Hume. 

“Ferguson has impressed us with his ability to lead, his hockey acumen, and his energy.  We expect our players to respond well to his leadership and we look forward to supporting him in every way.”

The 36-year-old Langley native played six full seasons in the WHL with the final two coming right here in Kelowna.

He lifted the Memorial Cup as a member of the Rockets in 2004.

Ferguson went on to have a lengthy career in the AHL and finished his career with two seasons overseas.

Laurie said the move was made because the new ownership group owes it to the players and fans to make a push to turn around what’s been a disappointing season.

“Our players understand the challenge ahead and embrace the opportunity to compete for a playoff spot,” he said. 

“We are excited to give Simon the opportunity to lead this hockey team and see if he can spark the group.”

He’ll make his Warriors coaching debut when the team returns from the holiday break on Friday, Jan. 3 against the Coquitlam Express.
