  • Volunteers begin spring clean-up in Peachland this weekend

Saturday marks the official kick-off of Community Clean-Up Month in Peachland.

A large group of volunteers will hit the back roads off Princeton Avenue and pathways along Okanagan Lake for a massive spring clean.

The group is leading by example and challenging others to do the same – pick a project, gather a group of people and do a clean-up of your own in your neck of the woods.

“For the past twenty years, literally thousands of individuals, groups and organizations have rolled up their sleeves and tackled trash busting projects in their neighborhoods,” said Rae Stewart from the Regional District Waste Reduction Office.

“Each year we host a kick-off event to help showcase how easy it is to get involved, and the great work that can be done when people pool their collective resources and goodwill.”

This weekend’s clean-up project has a broad scope, says Stewart, with volunteers planning to tackle a number of trouble spots.

That includes the shores of Okanagan Lake, Spring Lake, the Bedford Trails Lookout and a number of other areas around town.

“It’s disheartening when garbage of any kind ends up sullying our beautiful natural environment,” said Stewart.

“Fortunately, there are many among us that are willing to do something about it and help spread the message that it’s not ok to dump or toss anything in the great outdoors.”

Anyone wishing to pitch in and lend a hand this weekend can meet at 9:45 a.m. on Saturday across from the former compost site on Princeton Avenue in Peachland.

Volunteers are asked to wear safety boots and bring their own gloves, rakes and shovels.
