Construction workers operating near UBCO on Thursday, June 21 were struck by an unusual occurrence at approximately 3:30 p.m. when lightning ignited a small bushfire close to their work area.

"I was working up by the university and lightning struck about 50-feet down from our job site right beside our whole crew," said Madi Stradeski.

"About five minutes later we started to see smoke in the trees so I ran down the hill to try and find where the fire was . . . and started stomping the fire out as I called for a fire extinguisher."

Stradeski managed to get the incident on a short video.

While Stradeski attempted to extinguish the fire, a fellow crew member called 911 to report the fire.

By the time fire crews arrived, Stradeski and the rest of his team had successfully suffocated the ignition, leaving only the mop-up to the four personnel that arrived on scene. 

The fire was estimated to be about 25-feet by 15-feet in size.
