A supported housing project is going ahead aimed at getting 46 homeless Kelowna people in housing.

BC Housing Minister Selina Robinson said the project is a much needed one for clients dealing with mental health and addiction issues. Robinson said the supports at the facility "Will help these people reclaim their lives."

It's modular housing, and it's being described as temporary with a seven-year lease in place for the property. 

The facility will be built on Commerce Avenue, which is not a residential area.

There's been criticism over that, but Mayor Colin Basran said he has confidence in how the John Howard Society will operate the building.

"This is an important step on our journey to address homelessness in Kelowna," said Basran.

The Province selected Horizon North Modular Solutions to build the homes which are expected to be ready in October.
