(UPDATE: May 3 @ 12:15 p.m.) – The Superintendent of the Kelowna School District has responded to our story about the air supported soccer dome now in place at Rutland Senior Secondary. 

Kevin Kardaal says the School District 23 is empathetic with Mr. Charlesworth and other property owners, acknowledging that it is a bit of an eyesore, but says they are working with him. 

But he says what is getting lost here is the huge benefit for all the young people who will take advantage of the dome. 

As for the permitting process, Kardaal says Kelowna United which owns the facility was granted all the required permits by the City of Kelowna.  

(Original story: May 2 @ 3 p.m.) – The view from Rod Charlesworth's backyard has changed drastically, and he's not too pleased about it.

What used to be a gravel field, a neighbouring school and mountain vista has given way to one, huge dominating feature: a big white bubble.

It's a cover for an artificial soccer pitch.  The school district has all the necessary approvals in place, but as Charlesworth discovered, those approvals don't include consultation with neighbours.

Charlesworth isn't the only area resident to complain.

The School district is now in contact with Charlesworth and there's plenty to talk about.  Next-up are plans to erect a 6 metre high fence right on the other side to stop soccer balls at a new outdoor field that is also going in.
