(UPDATE: Dec. 21 @ 7:30 am) – As advertised, the Coquihalla was pounded by snow on Saturday.

Environment Canada had called for a "long period of heavy snowfall" over the weekend and travellers have seen just that.

Snow fell consistently throughout the day on Saturday, but no major accidents or closures were reported.

While a snowfall warning remains in effect, there is a bit of a travel window today with just 5-10 cm expected over the next 12 hours or so.

However, the snow will pick up again Sunday night with 10-20 cm expected, then "taper off" Monday morning with additional accumulation of around 5 cm during the day.

"There could be another burst of snow on Monday night with accumulations of 10-15 cm," Environment Canada warns.

(UPDATE: Dec. 20 @ 7:30 am) – A snowfall warning remains in place for the Coquihalla and it has been extended through the end of the weekend.

Environment Canada says the "long period of heavy snowfall" will continue with 10-20 centimetres today, another 10-15 cm overnight and 10-15 cm more on Sunday.

"There is potential for additional snowfall on Monday and Tuesday; however, accumulation remains uncertain," the snowfall warning reads. "Windy conditions are also expected, with periods of reduced visibility."

Those travelling the high-elevation mountain pass this weekend should be prepared for potential road closures.

(UPDATE: Dec. 19 @ 5:14 am) – The Coquihalla is set to continue being a difficult road to drive along today and Saturday.

Environment Canada's snowfall warning remains in place, with the forecaster calling for up to 30 centimetres on Friday.

Up to 15 cm more is possible on Saturday, it said.

Its bulletin, updated this morning, explains: "Travel will likely be challenging. Visibility will likely be reduced at times. Road closures are possible."

(UPDATE: Dec. 18 @ 8:30 pm) – The Coquihalla has reopened.

The highway is now flowing in both directions between Hope and Merritt following a multi-hour closure.

However, a snowfall warning remains in place for the route and driving conditions are less than ideal.

(UPDATE: Dec. 18 @ 3:28 pm) – The Coquihalla is now closed due to a vehicle incident at the Zopkios res stop. 

The vehicle incident is in the southbound lanes.

Assessment in progress and crews are on scene. 

Motorists are being advised to expect delays.

DriveBC advises people to take Highway 1 as a detour.

The next update is scheduled for about 5:30 pm.

(Original story: Dec. 18 @ 2:57 pm) – A vehicle incident on the Coquihalla is slowing traffic Thursday afternoon.

DriveBC is reporting a southbound vehicle incident at Zopkios brake check.

The incident is blocking the right lane.

Delays should be expected.

A motorist shared to the Coquihalla Road Reports Facebook group that traffic is at a standstill at the brake check at the summit. 

“Emergency personnel on site,” the motorist said.
