Prime Minister Justin Trudeau addressed an area of concern for many Canadians in his daily briefing today.

He announced that the federal government is investing $1.7 billion in the struggling energy sector.

The money will be used to clean up orphan and inactive wells in British Columbia, Alberta nad Saskatchewan.

The wells, which are no longer in use, can be detrimental to the environment and people’s health.

Cleaning them up will create thousands of jobs, 5,200 in Alberta alone, and also help many landowners that have been faced with this issue for years.

He thanked Jason Kenney’s Alberta government for working with the federal government to make this happen.

In addition, Trudeau also announced a $750-million emission reduction fund this morning, which will focus on methane.

The fund will primarily provide repayable commissions to firms to keep them competitive, lower pollution and maintain jobs.

One-tenth of that fund will be given to oil and gas companies operating offshore in Newfoundland and Labrador.

“Just because we’re in a health crisis, doesn’t mean we can neglect the environmental crisis,” said Trudeau.
