  • Tough blow for Rockets as recently-acquired d-man needs shoulder surgery

The Kelowna Rockets have spent the last few months beefing up the roster for the 2026 Memorial Cup and one of the biggest additions was defenseman Peyton Kettles.

The 18-year-old blue liner, a second-round selection of the Pittsburgh Penguins in the 2025 NHL draft, was acquired from the Swift Current Broncos on Oct. 30.

Unfortunately, Kettles only skated in three games with the Rockets before sustaining a serious shoulder injury.

He’s scheduled to undergo shoulder surgery in Pittsburgh on Friday and will be treated by the Penguins’ medical staff.

The Rockets medical team, led by Dr. Mike Bobyn and Dr. Lane Dielwart, has worked closely with the Penguins’ medical staff since Kettles suffered the injury.

The Kelowna doctors, as well Rockets’ head athletic therapist Scott Hoyer, will continue to remain heavily involved in his rehabilitation.

“We’re wishing Peyton a full and successful recovery,” said Rockets GM Bruce Hamilton. “He is an important part of our future. Our focus now is supporting him throughout his rehab and ensuring he returns healthy and strong.”

The Rockets offered no suggestion of a timetable for Kettles’ return to action, but did not indicate that the 6’6” right-shot defenseman could be lost for the season.
