If you find yourself hosting or attending a Halloween party, you have a once-a-year opportunity to make or bake something that looks scary or gross on purpose.
Embracing the macabre is such a big part of Halloween fun, and there are some recipes out there that let you do just that. Whether you want to make some scary sweets, spooky savouries, or creepy cocktails, we've compiled a selection of the scariest Halloween recipes for you. They might look a bit gruesome, but they're sure to be a hit amongst all the boils and ghouls!
Sriracha Devilish Eggs
Deviled Eggs might seem like a tame and old-fashioned appetizer, but this fresh and frightening recipe makes them the perfect Halloween party food. Take a break from all the sugary treats with high-protein eggs, and a filling made with spicy sriracha sauce and avocado. The best part? Use tiny red pepper slices to give your eggs devil horns.
Pretzel Ghosts
Just a few simple ingredients and you have these sweet and salty white chocolate ghosts! This is a recipe you can get the kids involved in, and it involves no baking or complicated steps: melted white chocolate, classic pretzels and candy eyes (which you can find at Walmart, BulkBarn, or other places with cake decorations!).
Zombie Finger Cookies
Ok, THESE are so creepy you might not even want to eat them. A long, slim cookie looks just like an emaciated finger, an almond for a nail and red icing for blood, they almost look too real. However, they're made with all the same yummy ingredients as regular shortbread cookies, so they do actually make great "finger food."
Eyeball Punch
A punch bowl is a must have at any Halloween party, and this recipe is a real winner for its gruesome looks. Lychees stuffed with blueberries make for the floating (and edible) eyeballs! If you can't find lychees, you can also try a few other tricks: freeze red grapes into ice cubes for an eyeball look; freeze dollar store plastic spiders and bugs into green juice (Kool-Aid or something similar) and use as ice cubes; or fill a rubber glove with water, freeze, remove the glove and use the now hand-shaped ice in your punch. You could even add dry ice for a more festive flair.
Gingerbread Skeletons
Generally speaking, you only get to make gingerbread men at Christmas time, but the spooky spin makes them perfect for Halloween too. You can use your favourite gingerbread recipe and simply pipe white icing in the shape of a skeleton after baking. The spicy flavours are great for fall, and if you don't have a deft hand with a piping bag, it won't matter because they'll look even more Halloween-y if they're not perfect.
#TreatYoSelf this Halloween and create something that's a trick AND a treat. There's more to Halloween deliciousness than just the candy!
