Elvis festivals, Iron Man competitions, Skaha Beach, floating down the channel, Peach Fest, and farmer’s markets are the summer activities I grew up looking forward to every year in Penticton, B.C. These iconic Okanagan events shaped my very childhood from the time we lived in Vancouver to our days living nearby in Kelowna. Penticton is very much enjoyed as a summer town and what’s new to me is how amazing it is as a winter destination as well!

This Christmas holiday our family stayed at the Penticton Lakeside Resort and Conference Centre to experience some of that winter charm and enjoy the affordable ski and stay packages with Apex Mountain Resort.

Penticton Lakeside Resort boasts the best view of Okanagan Lake in the city. From the luxurious West Wing, this view can be enjoyed from the couch in a spacious living room, looking out from floor to ceiling windows. We even spotted some swimmers in the water despite the freezing temperatures!

Our accommodations were fitting for our family of five, with a grand king-sized bed in a room also adorned with floor to ceiling windows, a separate TV and walk through en-suite. We made use of the indoor pool and hot tub as well as admired the gym and grand conference centre.

Decorated beautifully for the holidays, the boys felt like we’d travelled to the North Pole as a talking Santa read them stories, trains whistled, and trees and lights sparkled from floor to ceiling.

I recommend a plate of poutine and nachos from The Barking Parrot after a whimsical skate at the lakeside skating rink outside the hotel. Craft beer and delicious appies kept us warm after laughing around the rink. Open 7 days a week and until 1 AM on weekends, you don’t have to be a guest to come enjoy a pint or plate of wings!

Penticton is home to the TIME family of wines which incorporates TIME Winery, Evolve Cellars, and the McWatters Collection. We sampled them all at an amazing tasting experience in their showroom, a quick walk from the resort.

Guided by TIME’s knowledgeable sommelier, we toured the cellar, grazed on charcuterie, and learned much about how the different processes of wine making and terroir contribute to the nuances of wine, even within the same varietal. It was truly a memorable evening in their beautifully decorated, black and gold showroom. Several different experiences are available to book in advance and also make thoughtful gifts! Book here to reserve your spot at Sabre School, Signature Tastings, or Portfolio Tastings!

Penticton Lakeside Resort lies in the heart of downtown Penticton where you are able to shop, dine, and play all within walking distance from your room. Give yourself a full day to explore the city and plan to visit Apex Mountain Resort in your itinerary as well. These two have teamed up to provide affordable packages like the Ski and Stay Apex Resort, Snowshoe Adventure, Winter Getaway Package, and the Health & Wellness Package, great for New Years.

Before heading up to the hill, enjoy breakfast and specialty coffees from the Bufflehead Cafe located in the lobby of Penticton Lakeside Resort. A cozy coffee by the fireplace is just what you need before soaring down the slopes and signature BC powder at Apex. I recommend the pecan crusted french toast with a London Fog to give you that much needed energy!
