In just two short weeks, Victoria will no longer be providing residents with single-use plastic bags.
These changes will be introduced on June 1 as part of the city’s new Checkout Bag Regulation Bylaw.
This new bylaw intends on reducing the plastic bag litter and waste in the community and landfill.
Businesses will be able to provide paper checkout bags for a minimum charge of 15 cents per bag.
Come July 1, 2019, this minimum charge will be raised to 25 cents.
The City will begin administering fines in January 2019 if required.
According to the bylaw, an individual can be fined between $50 and $500, while a corporation can be fined between $100 and $10,000 dollars.
Better start collecting some reusable bags now!
