Due to an escalation in criminal activity during the Christmas season, the Saanich Police have compiled a list of tips to prevent yourself from becoming a victim.

- Be sure to park your vehicle in a well-lit area. Lock all doors and keep bags out of site.
- Be cautious of scams. The Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre (CAFC) collects information regarding Mass Marketing Fraud (telemarketing), advanced-fee letters (Nigerian letters), internet fraud and identity theft complaints. Click here for more information.
- Be sure you are donating to a real charity. Don’t feel pressure to donate if you are suspicious. Contact the Canada Revenue Agency to assure that the charity is registered.
- If you choose to shop through a classified ad, be sure to arrange to meet in a neutral and public location. Do not go alone.
- In order to avoid parcel theft, request a signature for the package so they are not left unattended. You can often schedule a delivery time or request an alternative location.
- It is okay to display a tree in your home but not the gifts. Wait until Christmas Eve to put gifts under the tree, otherwise it could become a target.
- If you are going to be away make sure to use timers for lights. Always remember to lock your doors and windows before leaving.
