Saanich police are currently investigating the inconclusive death of Scott Cooper in 1973.

On June 9, 1973, at around 3:25 a.m., a 20-year-old Cooper was found unconscious at the intersection of West Saanich Road and Wilkinson Road.

At the time, investigators were able to establish that Cooper had been downtown until around 1:30 a.m. where he caught a taxi from Douglas Street to Hillside Avenue to the old Town and Country Mall.

At around 3 a.m., Cooper hitchhiked from the Town and Country Mall and was dropped off West Saanich Road and Elk Lake Drive at 3:10 a.m.

At 3:25 a.m. a passing motorist found Cooper unconscious at the intersection of West Saanich Road and Wilkinson Road.

Cooper was transported to the Victoria General Hospital and remained in a coma until he died on July 19, 1973.

One theory is that Cooper may have been the victim of a hit and run, however, that was never proven.

A number of Cooper’s family members, friends and witnesses have spoken during the course of the investigation however his death has never been determined.

A coroner’s inquest was held in 1973 which has inconclusive results. 

Since the incident, Saanich police have conducted various additional investigative steps as advancements in science and technology have risen.

Cooper’s family still live in the Greater Victoria area and are looking for answers.
