The B.C. Coroners Service has launched a public inquest into the death of Jamie Wilford Shanoss.

According to the Coroners Service, the inquest is set to begin on Sept. 17, 2018, at 9:30 a.m. at the law courts in Prince George.

Shanoss was 51-years-old when he passed while in police custody on Nov. 21, 2016. At the time of death, Shanoss was in RCMP jail cells in Prince George.

Inquests are mandatory for any deaths that occur in the custody of a peace officer.

This inquest will examine the circumstances of the victim’s death and explore whether there are opportunities for a jury to make recommendations that may prevent deaths in similar circumstances.

Presiding coroner Donita Kuzma and a jury will hear evidence from witnesses under oath to determine the facts surrounding the death.

The Coroners Service will look to gather facts surrounding why the death took place and it not a fault-finding agency.
