In response to an increased number of thefts from vehicles and other property crimes in the area around George Street, the Prince George RCMP have increased enforcement efforts in the area.
At about 6 p.m. on Thursday, a male was observed stealing a backpack and several electronic devices from a vehicle on 4th Avenue near Ontario Street.
Police arrested the suspect as he attempted to flee the area on a bicycle. The suspect was identified as Kurt Steinhauser, a 35 year old Prince George resident.
Steinhauser is well known to police. At the time of his arrest, Steinhauser was bound by an undertaking while awaiting trial on charges of theft, possession of stolen property and possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose from an incident that occurred on in September. He also has two probation orders for previous convictions of theft and trafficking in stolen goods.
Steinhauser was held in custody and was to appear in court today. He has been charged with theft and possession of stolen property.
To prevent theft, police remind the public not to leave any items in their vehicles during this holiday season. Police also urge the public to continue to report any criminal or suspicious activity they observe
