Prime Minister Justin Trudeau recently said the Liberal government is trying to find the dividing line between guns suitable for hunting and ones that have no place in society because they pose significant dangers in the wrong hands. 

The government wants to reinforce a May 2020 regulatory ban on assault-style firearms with a comprehensive definition in a bill being studied by the House of Commons public safety committee.

Technical specifications concerning bore diameter and muzzle energy are included in the proposed definition, as well as shotguns designed with a detachable magazine that can hold more than five cartridges.

The intention is to outlaw assault-style firearms that are designed to kill as many people as quickly as possible, while respecting the legitimate needs of hunters and farmers.

In May 2020, Trudeau announced the immediate ban of  over 1,500 “military-grade” assault weapons, which was a decision triggered by the mass shooting in Nova Scotia the week prior.
