No one was injured in a fire at a Grand Forks motel over the weekend.

However, there was extensive damage as the fire at Johnny’s Motel along Hwy 3 spread to several units inside the building.

Investigators believe it started with a vehicle fire in the carport area of the motel, but they continue to probe the blaze at this time.

”Criminality has not been ruled out but there is also nothing to suggest it at this stage until a thorough inspection can be completed,” noted RCMP S/Sgt. Kris Clark.

According to Grand Forks Fire Rescue, the flames spread through the roof assembly before firefighters were able to contain it and prevent further spread.

While no one was injured during the incident, five people who were staying at the motel have been displaced from their accommodations.
