  • OC basketball teams sweep opening weekend

The Okanagan College Basketball Program made history this past weekend by winning all four games of the 2019-20 season-opening weekend. In their second year of league play, this was the first time that both teams came out of the weekend each with two victories.

The Coyotes travelled down to Vancouver to play Langara College on Friday and Columbia Bible College on Saturday.

The women’s team started Friday evening with a solid team effort, winning a tight one, 53-50. Top scorers for Okanagan College were Jordan Andres with 16 points, Kennedy Andres with 9 points, Sapna Deo and Maddy Postnikoff with 8 point each.

“The energy was great all game and the defence held Langara to 50 points. The level of toughness played a huge impact in the win with everyone battling each possession on both sides of the floor,” said coach Andrew Gini.

The women’s game on Friday was followed by the men’s game which was equally as exciting as the lead changed hands several times. OC Coyotes Men’s team went into the locker room at half time down 41-38 but came out strong and won the 3rd and 4th quarters finishing with a well-deserved win over Langara 93-88.

Top scorers included Eric Marbury with 24 points Matt Lafontaine with 22 points Seth Blundell with 15 points and Hunter Hughes with 10 points.

“It is always so hard to get a W at Langara and I am just extremely happy for both teams. It is early in the season, but these are important wins for our program,” said head coach Dino Gini.

With a quick turn around, the women’s team were back in action at 1pm at Columbia Bible College. It was Columbia Bible College’s home opener, which brought forward a great atmosphere to play in for both teams.

The women’s team came out strong and did not let up. Strong defense and great team play took care of business with OC defeating CBC 70-37. The bench scored 36 of the 70 points. Top scorers included Soleil Wilding with 14 points and Jordan Andres with 13 points, Jordan Kemper and Kennedy Andres added 8 points each.

In men’s action OC played a strong 1st half and continued to keep the pressure on. They did what they needed to do in defeating the CBC Men’s team 93-71.

Top scores for OC were Hunter Hughes with 24 points, Matt Lafontaine with 17 points, Seth Blundell with 14 points and Tanner Sandberg with 10 points.  Both teams are looking forward to their home openers this weekend.

They play host to Camosun College on Friday with the women’s game at 6 pm and men’s game at 8 pm. On Saturday OC hosts Vancouver Island University with the women’s game at 5 pm and men’s game at 7 pm.

“We are happy with our wins for both programs and now we need to quickly get back to work as we will have four tough games this coming weekend, our home openers,” said head coach Dino Gini.

“With both the Camosun women’s and men’s team ranked in the top 15 nationally coming into town and both VIU teams ranked in the top 5, we have our work cut out for us, but we are excited, and we will be ready,”

The home games will take place at Quigley School located at 705 Kitch Road. Get out and cheer on our town's newest team!
