  • Now You KNow! – All about the Heart & Stroke Foundation’s Big Bike event

The Heart & Stroke Foundation's Big Bike is in Kelowna this week at the Rotary Center of the Arts and our events team went out to see what the whole event is all about.

Presented by the Dairy Farmers of Canada, the Heart&Stroke Big Bike is one of the primary community fundraising events for the Heart and Stroke Foundation. This fun filled event gives local businesses an opportunity to raise funds for a great cause as well as enjoy a great team building experience.

The Big Bike has been in Kelowna since Wednesday when they had the Dairy Farmers of Canada on site all day and they will be here until Sunday when they have six teams riding and ice cream samples! Friday morning, BC Tree Fruits and Growers kicked off the event at noon with 21 participants (almost a full bike!) The team showed up all dressed in matching red Tree Fruit shirts to support the foundation. With about 35 teams participating, the fundraising goal for Kelowna was $120,000. BC Tree Fruits raised $1,400.

Aside from being a blast to take part in, this event is also very educational. Before hopping on the bike riders were taught the steps to identify a stroke with the acronym "F.A.S.T," as well as the steps for performing C.P.R. The team that raises the highest amount in their region will receive an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) to be placed in the community location of their choice.

Each team was also given a selfie stick to document their bike riding adventures, as well as tons of noisemakers. Once on board the bike with noisemakers in hand, the team set off on their 15-minute ride around downtown Kelowna.

A big red bike, the sunshine and supporting heart and stroke research is an awesome combination for a great day and event. If you haven't seen the bike yet don't worry , there are 6 more teams riding tomorrow starting at 11 a.m. going until 4:30 p.m.
