  • Nearly 3,000 apartment units currently under construction in the Central Okanagan

There are 4,167 dwellings currently under construction in the Central Okanagan.

Of those, nearly 3,000 are apartment units and more than half of those will be available to rent once complete.

Those numbers come from the Canadian Mortgage and Housing Corporation’s September report and are encouraging for a region that still is fighting a rental shortage.

The total number of dwellings under construction in September is only 16 more than were under construction in August.

It’s mostly the same construction, as there were only 67 housing starts and 51 housing completions in September.

“The trend measure for housing starts in the (Central Okanagan) moderated in the month of September as a result of a pullback in new construction activity in both the single-detached and multi-unit segments,” explained Taylor Pardy, CMHC’s senior analyst for BC.

“In the first nine months of 2018, while new construction activity has declined relative to the record pace of housing starts seen in the same period of 2017, it remains significantly above the 10-year average.”

At this point in 2017, there had been 2,912 housing starts in B.C. compared to just 1,838 this year.
