There is now a recycling option for people who enjoy the convenience of Keurig K-Cups, but feel bad about all the waste.

Garbage from K-Cups put a huge strain on the environment, and it has been estimated that the number of K-Cups sold could circle the world over 10 times.

A K-Cup is made up of a plastic cup, a foil top, a paper filter, and coffee grounds.  Each of the four parts can be separated and either recycled or composted with nothing going into the landfill.

That’s what ‘Kcup Recycling Service’ in Kelowna is setting out to do.

They will take your used K-Cups, separating the four components, recycling the plastic and foil, and composting the paper and coffee grounds, leaving nothing for the landfill.

The cost is $10 for 200 K-Cups.

Free pick up is available in some areas of the city, and convenient drop-off spots will also be coordinated.

Kcup Recycling Service will send the compostable material to Green Office Okanagan, their other business which offers organic waste collection for offices and businesses.

The Keurig brewing system reportedly has environmental advantages, like using less water, less electricity and reducing the amount of wasted coffee.

Keurig has announced they plan on introducing a 100 per cent recyclable K-Cup by 2020.
