An earthquake just 800 Kilometres off the west coast of Indonesia has been cause for concern as a Tsunami Warning was issued for the area.
On Wednesday, an earthquake with a magnitude of 7.8 struck southern Sumatra, Indonesia.
No tsunami has yet been observed, according to the U.S. Pacific Tsunami Warning Center.
Warnings have been issued by Indonesia and marine warnings have been issued in Australia, for both Christmas and Cocos Islands, although the watch has been canceled for the Australian coast.
The earthquake occurred on a strike-slip fault, so they say that the horizontal motion is unlikely to cause a large tsunami.
Still, large earthquakes aren’t uncommon in this region.
In 2004, an earthquake with a magnitude over 9 triggered a series of tsunamis killing 230,000 people.
