A man has died following a mining incident in the Kootenays.

Police were made aware of the situation at Elkview Operations near Sparwood around 7 am Thursday.

The man was initially reported missing at the coal mine site and Elk Valley Resource (EVR) rescue teams were leading a search of the property.

Police assisted with the investigation and responding Elk Valley RCMP officers remained in contact with EVR officials during the search.

Unfortunately, it was confirmed this morning that a 39-year-old contractor working on the site has died and his remains have been recovered.

The BC Coroners Service is currently on the scene alongside the RCMP, while the Ministry of Mining was also notified and will conduct an investigation at the site.

The name of the victim is not being released at this time, but police notified his next of kin this morning with assistance from EVR management.
