Meet Jennifer Poulin! Jennifer was born and raised in PG!
Who is your favourite person to spend time with and why?
My family. Life is busy, best spent with my hubby and kids.
What is your favourite local store in Prince George and why?
Ooh..Theory Hardware and Dandylines. They each carry such unique niche items. I have so many treasures from each store that compliment my style
Describe yourself in one word.
Creative.
If you could go anywhere in the world right at this moment where would you go and why?
Scotland. I recently found out that I have some Scotish heritage, and I would love to track that down.
What is your favourite activity in Prince George?
Anything outdoors, kayaking for sure though.
What is the most embarrassing thing that has happened to you?
last summer I tried paddle boarding on a kids kayak. I fell in such a way that I ended up with a massive gash and bruise on my shin the week before I was to photograph my brother's wedding.
What is the most inspiring thing that has happened to you?
I am currently in a Mastermind group for women in business with Emily Jane (Photography), and I have been very inspired to go deeper, in business and in life. It has been a very rewarding experience.
Tell us your favourite childhood memory.
My first dog Jake growing up was a big Shepherd. He liked to pick up sticks and carry them around the yard. By sticks I mean entire trees, and logs he could barely get his mouth around.
Where do you volunteer or give back to in the community?
Although I am not currently involved in an organization, I do look for opportunities to help people I come across, whether it be practically, financially, or a random act of kindness. I have been privileged to be able to make a difference in people's lives, just by being present and noticing an opportunity to reach out.
If you could change one thing in the world what would it be?
I believe with the influx of information readily available at our fingertips, we get way too emotionally involved with what is going on in the world around us. I heard a phrase recently, "Get your own house in order before you go out and try and change the world". We have so many opportunities to make real change in someone's life who may be right in front of us, OUR marriage, OUR children, OUR neighbors. Don't worry about what other people are doing, focus on your life, and how YOU can make an impact. Start there.
Where would you sneak away to in Prince George to spend some time alone?
Ness Lake. My grandparents bought property there in the 60's, and it's forever been in the family. It's my happy place
Where would you like to see positive change in Prince George and why?
I had a chat with a social worker friend of mine, and they really opened my eyes to a situation that is happening in schools, where kids come to school without breakfast, and no lunch. I would love to see/help facilitate a meal sponsorship program.
What do you think makes Prince George great?
So much opportunity, and being able to be outdoors.
What are 3 things on your bucket list?
Cage dive with sharks.
Climb a mountain.
Build and race my own drag car.
Tell us something that not everyone may know about you.
I did not consider myself a dog person until I got my pupper Juno, now I'm all in!
How do people connect with you, personally, through social media?
F: indigoportraitco IG: indigoportraitco W: indigoportraitco.ca
What is the name of your business/organization?
Indigo Portrait Co.
Why did you get into/start this business?
I have always loved photography.
What is the goal of your business?
To be able to show a woman her true beauty, as she is, and to empower her with confidence.
What has been your biggest struggle either in work or life?
It took me a long time to decide what I wanted to do as a career, so I feel like I am starting late, but I have learned a lot along the way that is helping to build my success.
If you could start all over again would you do things the same or would things be different?
I would definitely learn the business end of things sooner. Creativity will always bloom, and grow, and change. Business is the foundation of a sustainable career.
What do you always find yourself saying?
"just one sec". I'm always in the middle of something.
Tell us your best piece of life advice
Love God, love people. Those two things should keep you pretty busy.
If you could spend one whole day with anyone in the world who is currently alive, who would you select?
Queen Elizabeth. I'm sure she has some amazing stories to tell!
Why do you think it is important to shop locally?
Oh! SO important! Shopping locally means you are helping to build something. Where I shop, they know me by name, we collaborate on projects, we network, & support each other. We're building each others businesses. It's so rewarding to be able to shop local.
What has been your proudest accomplishment?
Being married to my husband for almost 15 years. Buying our first home, and raising our kids. Sappy, I know 😉
Give someone you think that deserves it a shout out and explain why!
Ahh…so many amazing people to choose from. My girl Katie from Polished Chaos Beauty! She just opened her own beauty studio, specializing in makeup and brow styling. It takes guts to go brick and mortar, and she is killing it!
My choice for the PrinceGeorgeNow In Focus spotlight is:
The Jack Van Somer Band!
