Meet Cara Roberts. Cara was born and raised in PG 41 years ago!
Who is your favourite person to spend time with and why?
My boyfriend and business partner Mark. We have been inseparable since we met because we make each other laugh, have a lot in common. We started dating when we were older so we know exactly who we are and what we want. Everything just works with us.
What is your favourite local store in Prince George and why?
To be honest, I love every minute at Active Body Nutrition. Our atmosphere and customers are incredible… it’s more about fellowship and learning from one another than just pick up and go. Our bar always has interesting visitors and lots of laughs
Describe yourself in one word.
Driven.
If you could go anywhere in the world right at this moment where would you go and why?
Kauai. We recently visited there and last night I learned of flood devastation. All of our favourite spots are suffering, and the incredible people we experienced could use all the help they could get. It’s an amazing place, we are so sad for them.
What is your favourite activity in Prince George?
Learning, laughing and sweating at XConditioning! Mike, Tara, Jay and their staff have built an incredible “Mecca” right here in PG for fitness enthusiasts.
What is the most embarrassing thing that has happened to you?
Anyone that knows me has a story about something fantastically embarrassing I’ve done.
What is the most inspiring thing that has happened to you?
I think coming from being a stay at home mom with no education to believing in myself and starting three businesses that I absolutely love. I’ve lived more in the past eight years than I did my entire life… and raised some pretty cool people along the way!
Tell us your favourite childhood memory.
Everything I did with my brother Wade. We grew up down by Wilson park and would always be outside riding bikes, climbing trees, put pennies on the train tracks, building forts. We knew it was time to come home when the street lights came on. It was a different world back then… the 80’s were the greatest time to grow up in my opinion. My greatest childhood memory lasts about 10 years straight.
Where do you volunteer or give back to in the community?
Our mission at the store is to give back every way we can. We are always fundraising for local charities, donating to community events, and one of my favorite is painting at the Taste Of India. I completed an original canvas painting live and they auctioned it off at the event in support of Rotary International. This year my piece raised $2,000 so I was stoked. I was also briefly a Rotarian last year, but time is a hot commodity for me right now… and until my youngest kid is grown I had to step back. I’ll be back again though! Our Yellowhead club is an incredible group to hang with and learn from as community givers to PG and our global family.
If you could change one thing in the world what would it be?
If I could change one thing it would be what is taught in our education system. In-depth classes on nutrition, (everyone should eat a diabetic diet IMO) how to balance a chequebook, how to save and invest, how to do taxes and an entire class on the negative effects of stress and mental wellness… and gym would be mandatory every day for every grade.
Where would you sneak away to in Prince George to spend some time alone?
My art studio.
Where would you like to see positive change in Prince George and why?
I think PG gets a lot right… but you can never have too much support for local business. Local business is the heart of the city. We have amazing stores, restaurants and mom and pop shops that many people in our community don’t even know exist!
What do you think makes Prince George great?
You can find something to do any time of year right in your own backyard. From art and culture to outdoor sports and local lakes… and of course our food. Lots of amazing local eateries to enjoy here.
What are 3 things on your bucket list?
I completed phase one of my first bucket list last summer and now I’m trying to make another. My life is exciting and I love every day, so it’s hard to say what’s next. My now is pretty great… I have a lot of things to look forward to in my future but for now, I’m really content. If I had to pick something I just want to see the world before we completely destroy it.
Tell us something that not everyone may know about you.
I never completed my grade 12 education… I’ve learned business through trial and error
How do people connect with you, personally, through social media?
Facebook and Instagram.
What is the name of your business/organization?
Active Body Nutrition PG.
Why did you get into/start this business?
It grew from my fitness business and the fact that my boyfriend hated his job and we wanted to just do something we love and are passionate about together.
What is the goal of your business?
To make PG the healthiest, and strongest fitness community in the world!
What has been your biggest struggle either in work or life?
I need a clone to get everything I commit to do in a day.
If you could start all over again would you do things the same or would things be different?
100% exactly the same.
What do you always find yourself saying?
Unfortunately, I haven’t grown out of “that’s what she said” just yet.
Tell us your best piece of life advice
Stop worrying what other people think of you and be true to yourself. At the end of the day, nothing else matters than being happy.
If you could spend one whole day with anyone in the world who is currently alive, who would you select?
Due to the lack of access I have to my oldest son in the Canadian Military, I would love to have him to myself for a whole day. We would train, eat and laugh and have a million cups of coffee talking out life with each other. I can’t wait to see him again.
Why do you think it is important to shop locally?
Local business owners are what sustain our community. Think about every property tax, grocery shop, activity and purchase local owners make. Without us, all money gets filtered far outside our community…I wish more people would think about it.
What has been your proudest accomplishment?
My kids of course.
Give someone you think that deserves it a shout out and explain why!
My Auntie Brenda from The Wheelin’ Warriors team. This woman has raised 2 amazing boys by herself, works countless hours for the City of PG, battles extremely painful health issues like RA and is preparing another ride to help cure cancer! I’m so proud.
My choice for the PrinceGeorgeNow In Focus spotlight is:
My neighbors at The Dragonstone Mongolian Grill.

I’ll end with my favourite quote.
Life is not about finding yourself… it’s about creating yourself- E Hubbard.
