After almost four years, repairs to Highway 1 through the Fraser Canyon have been completed.

As of Wednesday, vehicles can now travel on two lanes of the highway.

BC’s Ministry of Transportation and Transit said the third lane is scheduled to open in October 2025 once detour removal is completed.

While detour-removal and site-cleanup will continue into November, all major construction work is now completed.

The highway was realigned at Tank Hill, which is 14 kilometres east of Lytton.

Some of the other upgrades, which are meant to not only improve safety but ensure long-term resiliency, include a new elevated bridge deck, restored grade separation, improved drainage and other enhancements to safety.

The highway was hit hard during an atmospheric river event in November 2021.

Highway 1, along with Hwy 5 and Hwy 8, were temporarily closed for months to allow for repairs. 

Most of the highways were reopened with temporary repairs by January 2022.

A total of 18 sites were affected on Hwy 1 between Hope and Spences Bridge, including four that required extensive temporary repairs to reopen.

Over the past four years, there have been countless closures for road work.

Although the construction at Tank Hill is done, the province reminds motorists of a major bridge replacement happening on another section of the highway.

The Sackum overhead bridge, which is located about 22 kilometres east of Lytton and 13 km south of Spences Bridge, is set to be replaced this fall.
