(UPDATE: Jan. 7 @ 7:50 am) – Environment Canada has updated a pair of winter storm warnings for popular BC Interior highways and it's not looking good for anyone wanting to travel towards Alberta today.

After heavy snowfall already plagued the region on Monday, both Hwy 1 and Hwy 3 are expected to see massive dumps of snow again today.

Hwy 1 will see around 25 centimetres of snow in the areas of Eagle Pass and Rogers Pass, and that's nothing compared to what Hwy 3 is expected to see.

Over the next 24 hours, Hwy 3 is expected to get 30-50 cm of snow in the area around the Kootenay Pass, which would mean 70 cm of total snowfall since Monday.

That route isn't even an option right now, as DriveBC has closed it down due to a high risk of avalanche.

If you're driving between the Okanagan and Lower Mainland, things look a little better as only 5-10 cm of snow is expected for Hwy 5 and Hwy 3 around Manning Park.

(Original story: Jan. 6 @ 7:30 am) – It’s Hwy 3, Hwy 5 and Hwy 97C that are expected to be hit hard by snowfall today, but tomorrow it’ll be Hwy 1’s turn.

Environment Canada has issued a winter storm watch for the Trans-Canada Highway, which calls for 25 centimetres of snow on the route on Tuesday.

“A Pacific frontal system will spread significant moisture across the Columbia regions on Tuesday,” says the alert, which is primarily for the areas around Eagle Pass and Rogers Pass. 

“Consequently, snow will become heavy at times in the morning and last through Tuesday night.”

The snow is expected to taper off by Wednesday morning.

As expected, weather like this will make driving conditions difficult and travelers are encouraged to plan their trips around the weather.
