Even though fall is only days old and much of British Columbia is still experiencing summer-life weather, it’s time to start thinking about that seasonal tire change.

Winter tire regulations come into effect in BC on Wednesday, Oct. 1, which is only one short week away.

That means winter tires will be required if you plan on travelling on most of the province’s highways, with a few exceptions in the Lower Mainland and parts of Vancouver Island.

In the case of commercial vehicles, drivers will be required to carry chains.

Legal winter tires must have at least 3.5 millimetres of tread depth and be labelled with the M+S (Mud and Snow) or three-peak mountain snowflake (3PMS) symbols.

BC’s winter tire highway routes are marked with regulatory signs and any motorists not in compliance with the regulations beginning on Oct. 1 can be fined $121.

For commercial vehicles not carrying chains or bypassing an active chain up area, the fines are even higher.

Winter tire rules remain in effect in BC until March 31 or April 30, depending on the route.
