In the weeks leading up to Halloween, you might be trying to decide what treats to get for trick-or-treaters, or what to buy for yourself to binge eat while you watch horror movies. While there is obviously a huge selection of candies out there, there are some classics that (for some reason) only seem to appear around Halloween.
These treats range from candies to chocolates and everything in between, and Halloween just wouldn't be the same without them. Here's our quintessential list of Halloween candies that will never go out of style!
Tootsie Rolls & Tootsie Pops
You either loved or hated Tootsie Rolls, but these chewy chocolate candies were prevalent in any child's Halloween bag. The mini ones, the extra large ones or even the flavoured ones (my personal favourite) always seem to make an appearance this time of year. If you were lucky enough to get a Tootsie Pop, were you patient enough to count the number of licks it took to get to the bubblegum core?
Rockets
This was the one Halloween candy that seemed to last all the way until Christmas because of their sheer volume. The little bites of crunchy sugary/sour are a classic this time of year, and they've been around since 1963!
Candy Corn
This is another sweet that you either love or hate. It seems like Canadians were either raised to love this caramel-flavored corn-nib candy, or never experienced it growing up. However, even if you never tasted it growing up, you can surely appreciate its cultural seasonal influence!
Popeye "Cigarettes"
This was a very special treat in the candy bag. You only ever got one or two packs of these sugar "cigarettes" trick or treating, but "boy oh boy" when you did, you spent countless moments pretending to smoke them with your friends! Endless hours of fun and deliciousness.
Caramel Apple Suckers
These suckers would definitely get stuck in your teeth, but the sour apple and caramel combination would be so worth it. Plus, you can make this candy last for hours – every child's dream!
Double Bubble
What's better about this candy: the sweet pink bubblegum or the *hilarious* comic you got to read inside? Let's be honest, the comics were maybe a bit lackluster, but it still made this candy a true novelty in the treat bag, and a classic even now.
The Fantastic Four: Smarties, Coffee Crisp, KitKat and Aero
These four chocolates encapsulate the meaning of Halloween chocolate. You no doubt have your favourite of the four, but they all make their appearance and you'll eventually eat every variety of them, even your least favourite.
Caramel Squares
This was a treat you most likely got from an elderly person's home when trick or treating, as it's a sweet from an earlier age: nothing complex, just a simple square of delicious chewy caramel. It might glue your jaw together, but the simple flavours will always be classic.
"Fun Size" Reese's cups
They're just a smaller version of the classic Reese's Peanut Butter Cups, but the smaller "fun size" version is somehow just that – more fun! There's something wonderful about the small size and unwrapping the gold foil before gobbling it right up. And what's not to love about the peanut butter chocolate combination!
Warheads
This is a candy only for the bravest! They always lurk in the Halloween treat bag, but the intense sour flavour is sure to deter a lot of people. If you can withstand the sour flavour long enough, the candy underneath is quite delicious, but you have to take the risk! A perfect Halloween trick AND treat!
These sweets will hopefully be around forever as sugar-coated reminders of childhood and Halloweens past. What better time of year to #TreatYoSelf to the chocolates and candies of the season! What's your favourite Halloween Treat?
