Get Local with KelownaNow: Featuring Don-O-Ray Farms

Get Local is the newest series presented by KelownaNow, featuring some of our favorite local businesses and eateries! Get Local is our way of spotlighting local places we love and hope you will, too.

Farming is in the DNA of the Sanghera and Basran families.  For 3 generations, they have worked the land in India and Kelowna.

In 2004, the family took over operations at the very popular and fruitful Don-O-Ray farms (which has been in operation since the 1960’s)

With decades of experience, the family stays true to a farm to table philosophy and takes great pride in growing superb quality produce with customer service to match.

And as Autumn continues to settle in the Okanagan, the Don-O-Ray fields have ripened with incredible bounties.

The family has been busy, harvesting crisp apples, crunchy carrots, and colorful gourds that will become the centerpiece of many haunting Halloween displays and holiday tables.

What’s available at the farm has definitely evolved over the years.

Along with growing a plethora of produce, the family has taken to creating products made from the fruits of their labors.

If you are needing a few (or more) drops of hot sauce to spice up dinner, the Sangheras and the Basrans invite you to give their’s a try – which includes hot peppers sourced from their own garden and the process of making the sauce is done on entirely on premise.

Let’s continue this food journey, shall we!

Ah, butter chicken!  It’s good, right?

Well, if you want to give in to the need you may now have for some of this delectable Indian dish, picking up the home-made style butter chicken created and sold at Don-O-Rays is something that will satisfy those taste buds.  Versatile and savory! A great combination.

“Once you try it, you will be hooked," promises Jas Sanghera, one of the owners of Don-O-Rays.

Other homemade goodies you can pick up at Don-O-Rays include fruit pies using Okanagan berries and fruits, turmeric and garlic bread, samosas, freezer jams, and spice blends.

Wanting to provide a memorable experience (and fun photo ops) Don-O-Rays has added to their family!  By way of furry, feathered and fuzzy creatures and an onsite petting zoo/farm adventure.

“Moms can be shopping and the kids can be playing with the bunnies or going through the 6000 square foot maze,” says Sanghera.

And of course, there are pumpkins – lots and lots of pumpkins.
