We're all guilty of it – we swing by the liquor store on our way home from work, and pick up our usual bottle of wine. This ritual, however, can quickly become monotonous and stale.
Despite the abundance of choice available, it's more overwhelming than ever to know what to try.
Government liquor stores are often touted as having a less interesting selection than smaller, carefully curated wine boutiques. While in certain cases this may be true, there are some special finds many never take advantage of.
Here are three unexpected, affordable and equally delicious selections you may have been too nervous to try. Who knows, maybe they'll become your new habitual Friday night sipper!
Plantaze Vranac
This is likely a bottle and varietal most would pass up in the liquor store. The price of this wine is deceiving too, at only $12.99. Sadly, most wine today is sold based on one thing: the label. This bottle just doesn't have sexy marketing which likely deters many people from trying it. Don't be deceived, however. This bottle packs a lot of punch. Hailing from Montenegro, with ancient origins dating back as far as the 14 century. Expect an earthy, medium bodied red with ample red fruit, and plenty of acidity perfect for having with roasted meats.
Galil Mountain Kosher Viognier
Viognier is popping up in many unexpected growing regions, and for good reason. It is incredible with food, ages well, and is very friendly and approachable to the average palate. At only $19.99, this viognier shows classical characteristics of the varietal: notes of flowers, white peach and a creamy texture on the palate due to some light oaking. Galil Mountain is located in northern Isreal, situated very close to the Lebanon border.
Stina Cuvee Red
Yet another unexpected variety not widely found in Canada – plavac mali. At one point in time, this variety was thought to be the Croatian name for zinfandel, but has since been discovered to be a cross of Zinfandel with indigenous Croatian varieties. If you're a fan of big, textured reds, this is going to be a new favourite. This wine is fleshy, with aromas of dark berries, and a savoury like quality reminiscent of kalamata olives. Another fantastic value as well, at only $19.99.
With Christmas impending, step outside of your comfort zone and consider trying some new varieties. These are wines that will pair extremely well with holiday dinners, please your guests and won't break the bank.
