After weeks of wetter-than-normal spring weather, the BC Wildfire Centre is changing some things up for the Kamloops Fire Centre.

The region will begin to permit category two open burning as of noon on Friday, which means one or two concurrently burning piles no larger than two-metres high by three-metres wide are allowed.

A fuel break must be established around any category two burn area.

The BCWS urges people to take the proper precautions, like ensuring enough people, water and tools are on hand to control a fire and stop it from potentially escaping.

You’re also warned not to burn in windy conditions and always create a fire guard around the planned fire site by clearing away twigs, grass, leaves and any other combustible material.

And, of course, never leave a fire unattended.

The change in restrictions also means that fireworks, sky lanterns and burn barrels or burn cages of any size are now permitted once again as well.

While that goes for the entirety of the Kamloops Fire Centre, various rules and bylaws may change that within certain cities or towns.
