As of Dec. 20, companies in Canada are no longer permitted to produce or import some plastic items including grocery bags, straws, takeout containers and cutlery.
In a year, it will also be illegal to sell them.
The federal government estimates that this ban will eliminate 1.3 million tonnes of difficult-to-recycle plastic waste, as well as a million garbage bags worth of pollution.
While Prime Minister Justin Trudeau made a promise in 2019 that a ban would take effect by 2021, the government took a year longer than expected to determine a regulatory framework to make it happen.
