It only seems fitting that ‘complicit’ is Dictionary.com’s 2017 Word of the Year.

The word seems to sum up a year that has been marred by stories about Russian election influence, sexual harassment scandals, mass shootings and the opioid epidemic.

The word’s exact definition is “involved with others in an illegal activity or wrongdoing.”

According to Dictionary.com, searches for the word ‘complicit’ increased nearly 300% over the last year.

The first spike was on March 12th, an astonishing 10,000% increase in daily average lookups following a satirical ad on Saturday Night Live.
 

The skit saw Scarlett Johansson playing Ivanka Trump and attempting to sell a perfume called Complicit.

The second spike, which was even larger than the first, came after the real Ivanka Trump said “I don’t know what it means to be complicit” on CBS This Morning.
 

Another minor spike in searches for the word came on October 24th when Senator Jeff Flake announced his retirement and said “I will not be complicit.”

Dictionary.com also referenced the NFL’s anthem protests, the millions who participated in the worldwide women’s march and high-profile political resignations as reasons for the word’s popularity this year.

‘Complicit’ takes the crown from Dictionary.com’s 206 Word of the Year, which was ‘xenophobia.’
